How much imagination do cats have?

from a Wall Street Journal article about what cats are up to, mentally:

There is little evidence that cats (or dogs, for that matter) have much in the way of an imagination, so cats that have never been allowed outside probably don’t miss the fresh air they’ve never breathed.

If I’m reading this Wikipedia page right, this one, about “Scottish Fold” cats, then Maru:

and Waffles:

and Shrampton:

as well as other less famous Internet cats, and both of Taylor Swift’s cats:

TS1 TS2are all descended from the same Scottish cat who died in 1961.

“I really never know what I’m going to get on Helytimes,” reports one reader.

The other day I got mad at my cat for doing something undesirable.  Then later I was like, “what am I doing being mad at a cat?  She has no idea what human rules are.  She is a less than one year old furry mushball.  She is completely alone in the universe, with a brain incapable of processing even the simplest language.  How would she possibly know what’s good or bad in a house?  To her a flushing toilet is a marvel as wondrous as the Tomb Of Jahangir at Shahdara Bagh.”
